Is it possible for Saturday Night Live to be fun without being all that funny? This episode says yes

A rare case of an episode of SNL picking up steam as it went along, the end result was much better than the awful cold open seemed to promise.

A slight, not especially inspired SNL that seemed to find a bit of momentum late in the episode. Styles was solid, but lacked any breakout moments like Timberlake once did.

It's always nice when you have a capable performer who is willing to go against the grain of their public persona and can really come out of their shell for a good laugh, and that really helped make this episode one of the better ones this season.

It's not a good monologue - save for the cocaine joke and the apparent shade at Zayn Malik - but I wanted it to be, and credit for that goes to Styles, who was likable enough in his monologue that I didn't want to dislike how bad it was!

The sketches themselves were interesting and weird enough to work (and they did), but to also borrow from the cold open and the impeachment hearings criticism: The episode was still lacking in pizzazz.

As Saturday Night Live heads into its holiday stretch of episodes, it hit its first speed bump of the season this week. This has nothing to do with host Harry Styles... Instead, this was a simple case of many ideas not working out as expected

The former One Direction frontman seemed a bit nervous during his monologue and his first live sketch, but shook off those initial jitters by the time he was asked to play one-half of an Icelandic couple in a lamaze class.

As it turns out, Styles was the second-best such double-threat this season, but that's only because Chance The Rapper was in his way.

Thankfully, in Styles's first gig as host and musical guest, he shed some of that pride and dove right in.
