IT'S NOT so good to be king in The Royals, a silly but potentially addictive soap from One Tree Hill creator Mark Schwahn.
March 18, 2015
The Royals might have been more promising if it had been a little more ebullient and a lot more outrageous. There's something too ordinary about it. We want to be bloody gobsmacked, mate.
April 25, 2017
The Royals is just atrocious, plain and simple.

March 18, 2015
The show leaves the impression that the writers have never met a British royal or aristocrat and have never seen how a ruling class rules.
March 16, 2015
The navel-gazing on this show both ruins the trashy fun of the soap opera genre and is transparently hypocritical.

The Royals is at its most enjoyable when King Simon's scheming brother, Cyrus (Jake Maskall), is on screen conniving snarkily.

The Royals aims to fill the glossy hole left by Gossip Girl, and The OC before it. It's certainly sexy and soapy enough to fit the bill, but, so far, it lacks the sophistication of the former, and the compelling melodrama of the latter.
March 16, 2015
It's supposed to be wicked but the zingers don't sing; it's supposed to be campy but is just crass and, for long stretches, tedious.
