The series outright acknowledges that Dan is peak "Nice Guy," and with every shitty action he makes, one begs for the series to subvert rom-com expectations with this character. But it never does.

A holiday watch that lacks either the uplift of a Netflix or Hallmark movie or the slyness and bite of more subversive Christmas fare. Even darker holiday movies end in a place where one is glad one spent the time with the family in question.

If the presentation feels like a bit of an experiment, the content -- adapted from an Australian show -- is too familiar to be much more than ho-ho-hum.

The nicest surprise is Denis Leary's low-key and slow-burn performance as family man Sean Sr., for once not the most broken person in any given room.

It's striking how many of the storylines are either predictable messes or rushed messes that only work if the cast sells them hard enough.
