"Axis Mundi" is miraculous. It's leaner and more focused than anything season one had to offer.

This episode highlights exactly what makes The Leftovers not just one of the best shows on television but specifically better than more popular shows.

[The firmer grasp on plot] still doesn't make The Leftovers a great show, but it makes it a great social exercise. This was a premiere I was glad i watched, but I never, ever want to watch it again. Ever.

What a wonderful premiere. Yes, a reset button has been pushed, and the end result is The Leftovers Season 2 Episode 1 delivered one of its best hours. It's fresh, mysterious and full of possibilities, with a decidedly wicked edge.

Before sending viewers to the new home base in Texas, "Axis Mundi" turned back the clock, Kubrick style, to the days of early man...the perfect metaphorical bridge between seasons 1 and 2.

That opening. Wow.

So what does it all mean? I don't know yet, and that's what makes this moment, with the rest of The Leftovers second season still ahead of us, so delicious.

If "Axis Mundi" is any indication, it should be an interesting season that offers more compelling material upfront than season one ever dared.

The stakes couldn't have been higher, and, if I may mix my metaphors, they all cleared the bar with inches to spare.
