The Last O.G. starts out good, if a bit stiff and formulaic, then gets better in subsequent episodes as we get to know the hero's circle and the cast gets into a new groove together.

Get past the series' OK opener along with some of its searing vulgarity - hey, this is a Tracy Morgan show, after all - and "The Last O.G." settles down into something else and something better

The Last O.G., like its protagonist, may be a little imperfect. Still, with [Tracy] Morgan and [Tiffany] Haddish at its center, you're rooting for it and their characters to succeed.

Overall, the show is coming out of the gate swinging in a way that can not be ignored. It very much has the potential to become a mainstay series for TBS, as well as a long-term gig for Morgan.

If the comedy wants to be a clever, foul-mouthed sitcom with broad appeal rooted in its affable performers, that's more than fine. But it's not very gangster.

I can't say The Last O.G. is a triumph; the writing would need to cut even deeper for that, and every single jail-shower joke would need to miraculously disappear. But it's nonetheless a promising vehicle for Morgan, and I'm eager to see where it goes.
