Lena and Martin aren't as much fun as the series would like them to be, and their kids don't have much in the way of personalities to warrant any real interest in them early on.

ABC has far more family-driven sitcoms than any of its rivals. Splitting Up Together shows that the network is still finding new ways to make them work just fine.

...the attractive leads... argue with irritating regularity. They fell out of love, and the sitcom feels like a long, forced push to get them back together.

Best of all is [Jenna] Fischer, who was the normal soul of The Office and has a satisfying way of commanding attention without asking for it, of seeming not to act, which is of course ... acting.
