In the previous season of that series, David acted very strongly towards Oliver to get information about the place of Syd. Things turn out in the third season, especially after Farouk's defeat by David. Now, the true face of the enemy reveals itself and perhaps David will be on the verge of being fully reserved in his steps.

There's a clear direction, strong character motivations, and just enough that's new so the series doesn't repeat itself. It's something of a surprise to be sure, but definitely a welcome one.

The smartest move that this first episode makes is to transfer the audience into the perspective of a brand-new character, essentially using Switch's mutant power to rescue the story, the series, and the characters from the dour fate it created.
