Tries to grab us, jolt us or titillate us with these literal flights of fancy -- flights that almost break the sound barrier as well as the fancy. Las Vegas needs all the gimmickry it can get because the basic premise of the show is shaky.

Las Vegas has so many assets, including James Caan as its biggest-name star, that the show should be a good bet. But like casino chips sprinkled over a roulette table, the assets of this NBC show aren't being used very wisely.
