It warmed up a bit then and we were reminded of what a good actor Cleese is, even if you wouldn't necessarily place him in a benign, feelgood comedy where the talent felt as if it were only using three cylinders.

As mildly enjoyable as it becomes through the series, it's unlikely that many people will still be talking about Hold the Sunset come the summer.

[Jason] Watkins is a brilliant comic actor who could make the phone directory funny, but Roger's extraordinarily dismal midlife crisis is beyond the reach of even his talent to amuse.

The attempt by Cleese, in his first BBC show since Fawlty Towers, to be genially benign was so excruciating that I didn't know where to look.
