With [Dick] Van Dyke and an enjoyable supporting cast onboard, it's light, gentle, goes-down-easy entertainment. And there's nothing wrong with that.

All Diagnosis Murder wants to do is please an audience of older viewers, renew their TV friendship with Van Dyke, and give the star's son Barry, who plays a vacant-eyed cop, some work.

As both medical and crime dramas go, this one ranks fairly low on upsetting content -- especially compared to today's primetime standards.

Writer James Kramer has penned a shrewd murder mystery as the series' first entry; it's starting off on the right foot.
