Season 7 returns in explosive fashion, as Dexter is finally forced to confront his greatest fear, as Debra witnesses his insatiable, ritualistic slaying of a killer. Deb is conflicted. She loves her brother, but she is also a detective who is sworn to uphold the law. Blood wins out and she willingly becomes an accessory by helping Dexter cover up the crime. Thus begins her struggle to understand Dexter';;s Dark Passenger and her efforts to cure him. Dexter's secret is also discovered by kindred spirit Hannah McKay, a serial killer in her own right.

I feel like the series is ready to stop placating to the lowest common denominator and start showing us exactly how bad things can get for a killer with a conscience.

If the record-setting ratings for Dexter as of late get it extended for another season, or more, that will mark the end of my viewership, because this is one ship I'd rather not go down with.

The current season [of] Dexter was going along pretty well for a while. But this week - hoo, boy...I'll tune in next week to see how this plays out, but unlike Dexter, my heart's not really in it.

The series succeeds by being a credible and entertainingly complicated psychological thriller with good characters, a sense of humor and especially a languid rhythm and sun-kissed look that belie the darkness and bloodiness of the stories.

The first few episodes of the new season do little to alleviate this longtime fan's feelings that the show should have ended its run before now.
