Rather like Laing herself, Before We Die is far from straightforward, with several roads leading to Croatia, and back to the war in the former Yugoslavia.

It's the kind of bewilderingly complicated detective drama we've become used to, the sort where you can't quite recall who's doing what to whom, or why, but we still feel for the various complicated characters living their complicated lives.

I have to say they've done a neat enough job, swirling mists and grim seaweedy docks evoking an imaginarium of hidden threat constantly.
