The Crimson Field - Season 1
We live here the worst periods of history during World War I. These events began with a team of doctors, nurses and volunteers working in a field hospital to assist war wounded and wounded in front tents during the First World War. It seems that this is a daily battle to keep the soldiers well to fight daily. Perhaps the choice of women to work there is a threat to some, but the decline in staff makes the hospital more dependent on female volunteers during that period.

The wartime setting gives The Crimson Field more gravitas than a Downton-style soap but the premiere episode never gets too bleak.

Although the stories may not stick with the viewer in the way that many quality television dramas tend to do, both the drama involving each individual nurse as well as the soldiers they treat remain entertaining.

It's a similar mix of highstakes drama and old-fashioned soap, but it's too soon to say if it carries the unexpected bite of [Call the] Midwife.
