Piercing
It's a business trip that turns all things perfectly for a man named Reed who is engaged in a completely different work experience. That story began as Reid brought a bag full of clothes, as well as a toothbrush and several killers. Reid may be planning to do something very dangerous as the killing of a victim is planned. Reed does this work, saves himself from his malicious motives and continues to be a good husband and father. Maybe it's too bad and getting worse when he gets to know Jackie, a seductive invitation girl up to his room to achieve a certain goal.

Darkly funny, but still unapologetically grim, this plays very much like a modern version of Takashi Miike's iconic 1999 film Audition, only with a lot less of a brutal finale.

For every clever twist, there's a dead giveaway; the movie's high-style décor is more alluring than the drama.

Pesce deploys a potent arsenal of stylistic tools - urban landscape miniatures, plushly disquieting Lynchian interiors, flashbacks, creature effects, and florid gore - to tell the story of Reed.

A darkly funny and consistently unsettling two-hander that explores S&M with a beguilingly light touch.

Undeniably striking from an aesthetic standpoint, but dragged down by repetitive, ultimately vacuous cat-and-mouse games.

The dream-team pairing of Abbott and Wasikowska, two of the most interesting, subtle and risk-loving performers of their generation, is a huge compensation.

Piercing is an unnerving mix of loveliness and lunacy.
February 22, 2019
A darkly comic giallo-esque romance, torturously literalising all the dynamics of S&M, while accommodating the persistence of trauma.

Pesce presumably wants to give us an exquisite tease, but I found it a bit of a pain.

What a deliciously demented and disturbing drama Nicolas Pesce's "Piercing" is, dripping with gore and laden with forbidden innuendo.

Mia Wasikowska turns up and it seems the power games have only just begun. Nasty but stylishly executed.

Piercing is an unsuccessful provocation, and I didn't get anything out of it beyond a few wispy ideas about how we may never really understand what we want from each other.
